The Saginaw Old Golds from Michigan were winners of the Ohio Cup, the Michigan State Championship, the Deerfield “World Series” and several other tournaments. Now they can add the Gettysburg Tournament to their resume.
The Old Golds sliced through the competition like a hot knife through warm butter on a beautiful weekend for base ball at Hickory Hollow Farms. Saginaw downed Merchanicsburg and Mudville in the Lincoln Division to reach the medal round on Sunday. After disposing of the Mid Atlantic League leading Chesapeake City Cecils, the Old Golds broke through with 10 runs in the 4th inning and went on to rout the host Elkton Eclipse 22-5 to take home the gold ball.
Elkton got to the championship by defeating the Central City Stars from Colorado and the Cincinnati Buckeyes on Saturday. Chesapeake City got to the semis by downing Flemington and Huntington on the first day. Flemington joined the group as the wild card after tie breakers. Flemington defeated Huntington on the first day.
The tournament was not so much about competition as it was friendship and learning about new clubs from all over the country. Huzzah to Gettysburg Eddies, Hickory Hollow Farms, and the Gettysburg Convention and Tourism Bureau for their support!
